La Sega Dreamcast: Un Capolavoro Incompreso della Sesta Generazione di Console

La Dreamcast è una console per videogiochi domestica sviluppata e venduta da Sega. Prima della sesta generazione di console per videogiochi, è stata rilasciata in Giappone il 27 novembre 1998, in Nord America il 9 settembre 1999 e in Europa il 14 ottobre 1999. Quinta e ultima console domestica prodotta da Sega, la Dreamcast è il successore del Sega Saturn, il cui fallimento commerciale ha spinto l’azienda a rilasciarla solo quattro anni dopo l’uscita del suo predecessore.

Innovazioni e Sfide Tecnologiche

Tutti i giochi con licenza per la Dreamcast sono stati rilasciati nel formato GD-ROM, un disco ottico proprietario basato su CD sviluppato congiuntamente da Sega e Yamaha Corporation, capace di memorizzare fino a 1 GB di dati. La Dreamcast stessa presenta un blocco regionale. Durante lo sviluppo della console era disponibile il formato DVD-ROM, ma la sua tecnologia allora emergente fu ritenuta troppo costosa da implementare. Questa scelta ha avuto conseguenze per Sega quando i concorrenti, come la PlayStation 2 di Sony, entrarono sul mercato; la Dreamcast non poteva offrire la riproduzione di film in DVD quando il pubblico iniziò a passare dai VHS ai DVD, e i suoi giochi non potevano sfruttare la maggiore capacità di archiviazione e il costo inferiore dei DVD. Inoltre, un exploit nel sistema di protezione dalla copia della console tramite il supporto del formato MIL-CD consentiva agli utenti di giocare molti giochi masterizzati su CD-R senza modifiche hardware.

Titoli di Lancio e Libreria di Giochi

Il rilascio iniziale della Dreamcast in Giappone contava quattro titoli di lancio: Virtua Fighter 3tb, Pen Pen TriIcelon, Godzilla Generations e July. Il debutto nordamericano presentava 19 titoli di lancio, tra cui i molto attesi Sonic Adventure, Soulcalibur e NFL 2K. L’introduzione europea prevedeva originariamente 10 titoli di lancio, ma la lista aumentò a 15 grazie al ritardo dal lancio originale previsto per il 23 settembre, che permise l’inclusione di alcuni titoli aggiuntivi.

A causa della somiglianza dell’hardware della Dreamcast con la scheda arcade NAOMI di Sega, la console ha visto diversi porting quasi identici di giochi arcade. Inoltre, poiché l’hardware della Dreamcast utilizzava componenti simili a quelli dei personal computer (PC) dell’epoca, ha visto anche alcuni porting di giochi per PC.

Declino e Fine del Supporto

Sega ha interrotto la produzione dell’hardware della Dreamcast nel marzo 2001, e il supporto software è rapidamente diminuito di conseguenza. Il software ha continuato ad uscire fino al 2002, anche se l’ultimo gioco con licenza su GD-ROM è stato Karous, rilasciato solo in Giappone l’8 marzo 2007, quasi in coincidenza con la fine della produzione di GD-ROM il mese precedente. L’ultimo gioco di prima parte per la Dreamcast è stato Puyo Puyo Fever, rilasciato esclusivamente in Giappone il 24 febbraio 2004.
