Sega CD: l’espansione multimediale della storica console a 16 bit

Il Sega CD, conosciuto come Mega-CD in gran parte del mondo al di fuori del Nord America e del Brasile, è un dispositivo aggiuntivo per la console Sega Genesis, progettato e prodotto dalla stessa Sega. Lanciato in Giappone nel 1991, arrivò in Nord America nel 1992 e nelle regioni PAL nel 1993.

Più che un lettore CD, un’espansione a tutto tondo

Il Sega CD non era solo un semplice lettore CD per la console. Aggiungeva un lettore CD-ROM che permetteva di giocare a titoli specifici su CD, offrendo capacità hardware aggiuntive. Inoltre, poteva riprodurre CD audio e dischi CD+G, che combinavano l’audio con testi sincronizzati sullo schermo.

Sebbene il dispositivo disponesse di una CPU più veloce rispetto alla Genesis e alcune capacità grafiche migliorate, l’obiettivo principale era espandere la capienza di memoria dei giochi, permettendo titoli più lunghi e complessi rispetto alle cartucce tradizionali.

Un successo limitato

Nonostante le potenzialità, il Sega CD non riuscì a raggiungere un grande successo commerciale. Vendute circa 2.24 milioni di unità in tutto il mondo, le vendite furono inferiori alle aspettative e la produzione cessò ufficialmente nel 1996.

Un catalogo variegato per tutti i gusti

Nonostante il flop commerciale, il Sega CD vanta una libreria di ben 207 giochi. [a] Tra questi, troviamo titoli sviluppati esclusivamente per il dispositivo, conversioni di giochi arcade e persino esperienze multimediali come documentari e film interattivi. È importante sottolineare che 57 giochi uscirono solo in Giappone, 38 solo in Nord America e 4 solo in Europa. Inoltre, sei titoli sfruttavano sia il Sega CD che il successivo add-on 32X.

Un’eredità per i collezionisti

Sebbene non sia stato un successo commerciale, il Sega CD rimane un oggetto ambito da collezionisti e appassionati retrogaming. La sua libreria di giochi, pur con titoli di qualità variabile, rappresenta un viaggio nella storia del gaming e offre la possibilità di scoprire titoli unici e sperimentali.
