CD-i: la promessa multimediale che non ha sfondato

Il CD-i (Compact Disc-Interactive) è un formato a dischi ottici sviluppato principalmente da Philips come estensione del CD-ROM e del CD audio. Nato dalla collaborazione tra Philips e Sony, il CD-i aveva l’ambizione di rivoluzionare settori come l’educazione, la vendita al dettaglio e l’intrattenimento domestico, integrando audio, testo e grafica (specifiche Green Book). Oggi, però, il CD-i è ricordato soprattutto per i videogiochi.

Un supporto versatile con ambizioni multimediali:

Fisicamente identico ai CD standard, il CD-i poteva contenere fino a 744 MB di dati, inclusi 72 minuti di video full motion. I lettori CD-i erano solitamente dispositivi autonomi collegabili a un televisore. Esistevano anche configurazioni meno diffuse, come televisori con lettore CD-i integrato e moduli di espansione per personal computer. Sebbene la maggior parte dei lettori fosse prodotta da Philips, la licenza del formato venne concessa anche ad altri produttori, tra cui Sony che lanciò lettori professionali CD-i con il marchio “Intelligent Discman”.

A differenza dei lettori CD-ROM, i lettori CD-i erano sistemi informatici completi basati su microprocessori Motorola 68000 e un proprio sistema operativo, il CD-RTOS (“Compact Disc – Real Time Operating System”).

Oltre i videogiochi: edutainment e multimedialità:

Il formato CD-i non si limitava ai videogiochi. Venivano infatti pubblicati anche titoli “edutainment” e di riferimento multimediale, come enciclopedie interattive e tour virtuali di musei – particolarmente popolari prima dell’avvento di internet – e software per uso aziendale. I lettori CD-i di Philips offrivano persino funzionalità internet come abbonamenti, navigazione web, download, posta elettronica e gioco online.

Obiettivi ambiziosi e un posizionamento incerto:

L’obiettivo di Philips era portare contenuti multimediali interattivi al grande pubblico, unendo le caratteristiche di un lettore CD e di una console da gioco a un prezzo inferiore rispetto a un personal computer con lettore CD-ROM.[4] I primi kit di sviluppo per il formato uscirono nel 1988, mentre il primo lettore consumer, il Philips CDI 910/205, arrivò sul mercato a fine 1991 a un prezzo di circa $1.000 (equivalenti a $2.237 nel 2023). Il lettore poteva riprodurre dischi CD-i interattivi, CD audio, CD+G (CD+Grafica), Photo CD e Video CD (VCD) – questi ultimi richiedevano una scheda video digitale opzionale per la decodifica MPEG-1.

Presentato inizialmente come “sistema di intrattenimento domestico” e successivamente come “piattaforma di gioco”, il CD-i non riuscì a conquistare il mercato. Philips abbandonò progressivamente il formato nel 1996, sebbene alcuni licenziatari continuarono a supportarlo per qualche anno
