Sega Master System: la sfida all’ hegemony Nintendo

Il Sega Master System è una console iconica degli anni ’80, che ha segnato un capitolo importante nella battaglia per la supremazia nel mondo dei videogiochi casalinghi. Nato dall’evoluzione della linea SG-1000 lanciata in Giappone, il Master System arriva sul mercato internazionale nel 1986, entrando in diretta competizione con l’imponente Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

Dalla terra del Sol Levante al mondo intero

Il Master System nasce in Giappone nel 1985 con il nome di Mark III, una revisione dell’SG-1000 con grafica migliorata. Questa versione viene poi riadattata per il mercato estero assumendo il nome di Master System e uscendo prima in Nord America (1986), poi in Europa (1987) e successivamente in Brasile e Corea (1989). Curiosamente, nel 1987 esce anche una versione giapponese del Master System, leggermente diversa da quella originale: include un chip audio FM integrato, uno switch per fuoco rapido e una porta dedicata per gli occhiali 3D.

Un arsenale di giochi e accessori

Il Master System punta sull’offerta di un vasto parco giochi, fruibili sia tramite cartucce standard che tramite un formato proprietario a schede magnetiche chiamato Sega Card (simile a una carta di credito). Tra gli accessori disponibili spiccano la pistola ottica per i giochi di tiro e gli occhiali 3D per titoli specifici. Il successivo Master System II, uscito nel 1990, elimina lo slot per le Sega Card, diventando un sistema esclusivamente a cartucce e perdendo la compatibilità con gli occhiali 3D.

Una battaglia combattuta su più fronti

Il Master System si lancia in una sfida titanica contro il colosso Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Sfortunatamente, la libreria di giochi del Master System risulta più limitata e con un numero inferiore di titoli acclamati dalla critica, complici anche le politiche restrittive di Nintendo che imponeva l’esclusività di piattaforma per i propri giochi.

Nonostante l’hardware più moderno e performante, il Master System non riesce a scalzare la posizione dominante di Nintendo in Giappone e Nord America. Tuttavia, la console riscuote un enorme successo in altri mercati come Europa, Brasile, Corea del Sud e Australia.

Un’eredità indelebile

Si stima che il Master System abbia venduto tra i 10 e i 13 milioni di unità in tutto il mondo, a cui vanno aggiunti gli 8 milioni di varianti vendute da Tectoy in Brasile. Sebbene spesso oscurata dal successo del NES, la critica riconosce oggi l’importanza del Master System come trampolino di lancio per il successivo Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) e per aver proposto titoli di grande valore, soprattutto nelle regioni PAL (Europa e Sud America).
