Stadia: L’Ascesa e la Caduta del Servizio di Cloud Gaming di Google

Stadia, il servizio di cloud gaming sviluppato e gestito da Google, ha rappresentato un ambizioso tentativo di rivoluzionare il modo di giocare, ma la sua storia si è conclusa con una chiusura prematura. Lanciato pubblicamente nel novembre 2019, dopo una beta chiusa iniziata nell’ottobre 2018, Stadia prometteva di offrire streaming di videogiochi fino a 4K di risoluzione e 60 fotogrammi al secondo, supportando anche il video ad alto range dinamico (HDR).

Funzionalità e Tecnologia

Stadia era accessibile tramite dispositivi come Chromecast Ultra, Android TV, PC tramite browser Google Chrome e altri browser basati su Chromium, Chromebook, tablet con ChromeOS e l’app mobile Stadia su dispositivi Android supportati. Google ha anche introdotto una versione sperimentale che estendeva la compatibilità a tutti i dispositivi Android capaci di installare l’app di Stadia. Nel dicembre 2020, è stata rilasciata un’applicazione web progressiva basata su browser iOS per Stadia, permettendo di giocare tramite il browser Safari.

Il servizio offriva due tier: un servizio base gratuito che permetteva lo streaming fino a 1080p e Stadia Pro, un abbonamento mensile che garantiva la massima risoluzione di 4K, suono surround 5.1, HDR, e una collezione crescente di giochi gratuiti. Entrambi i livelli permettevano il gioco multiplayer online senza costi aggiuntivi.

Integrazione e Caratteristiche Uniche

Stadia era integrato con YouTube e disponeva della funzione “state share”, che permetteva ai giocatori di avviare un gioco supportato da uno stato di salvataggio condiviso da un altro giocatore tramite un permalink. Supportava il controller di gioco proprietario di Google e vari controller non Stadia tramite connessioni USB e Bluetooth.

Competizione e Critiche

Stadia si trovava in competizione con altri servizi di cloud gaming come PlayStation Plus di Sony, GeForce Now di Nvidia, Luna di Amazon e Xbox Cloud Gaming di Microsoft. Il servizio ha ricevuto recensioni miste, principalmente criticato per il suo limitato catalogo di giochi e la mancanza di alcune funzionalità promesse. Inizialmente, Google aveva pianificato di sviluppare giochi interni oltre ad ospitare giochi prodotti da terzi, ma ha abbandonato questo piano nel febbraio 2021, chiudendo i suoi studi.

Chiusura di Stadia

Nonostante gli sforzi, Google ha annunciato nel settembre 2022 che avrebbe chiuso Stadia. Il servizio è stato dismesso permanentemente il 18 gennaio 2023. Google ha rimborsato coloro che avevano acquistato l’hardware e ha fornito un aggiornamento software al controller di Stadia per abilitare la connettività Bluetooth, permettendo il suo utilizzo su computer e console di gioco.

Stadia rimarrà nella storia come un caso di studio di come le ambizioni tecnologiche, nonostante siano supportate da una grande azienda, possano affrontare ostacoli insormontabili senza una chiara adozione del mercato e supporto continuo.
