Acorn Electron: La Storia del “Miniaturizzato BBC Micro”

L’Acorn Electron, conosciuto affettuosamente come “Elk” all’interno di Acorn e al di là, è stato introdotto nel mercato nel 1983 come alternativa a basso costo al più famoso BBC Micro. Sviluppato da Acorn Computers Ltd, l’Electron mirava a fornire molte delle funzionalità del suo predecessore più costoso, a un prezzo competitivo rispetto a quello dello ZX Spectrum.

Caratteristiche e Funzionalità

L’Electron disponeva di 32 kilobyte di RAM e il suo ROM includeva il BBC BASIC II insieme al sistema operativo. Era capace di grafica bitmap e poteva utilizzare un televisore, un monitor a colori (RGB) o un monitor monocromatico come display. Il sistema era in grado di salvare e caricare programmi su cassette audio tramite un cavo fornito, che lo collegava a qualsiasi registratore a cassette standard.

Espansioni e Accessori

Per colmare le lacune del BBC Micro, Acorn introdusse diverse espansioni. Tra queste, il modulo di espansione generico Plus 1, che offriva porte joystick analogiche e porte parallele, insieme a slot per cartucce ROM. Inoltre, Acorn produsse l’espansione dedicata Plus 3, che includeva un controller di disco e un’unità floppy disk da 3,5 pollici.

Nonostante un inizio incerto e ritardi nella produzione, l’Electron divenne per un breve periodo il microcomputer più venduto nel Regno Unito. Si stima che tra 200.000 e 250.000 unità siano state vendute durante la sua vita commerciale.
